NIMIX Pipeless Plant for Coatings

Customer
Herberts Limited, UK
Product
NIMIX supplied a custom pipeless plant comprising of twenty-eight 264 gallon (1,000 liter) NIMIX IBC-based mixers complete with drive stations, for blending coatings.
Problem
Herberts had a requirement for a pipeless plant to blend coatings which have a tendency to settle out. Bottom to top recirculation for resuspension of the solids content would be an advantage in the new plant, and low shear was required to save damage to some metallic automotive coatings. Additionally, emission of VOCs was a problem with conventional open topped mixing vessels.
Objective
The objective was to utilize the benefits of NIMIX technology in producing IBC-based mixers with the following capabilities:
- Variable batch size
- Homogeneous mix
- Low shear suspension
- No VOC emission
- Simple coupling to drive station
- Waste minimization
Approach
NIMIX supplied twenty-eight 264 gallon (1,000 liter) NIMIX IBC's with thirty NIMIX drive stations. Each NIMIX had its own drive station and the extra drives were used for resuspending before filling, and as a cleaning station. Coatings manufactured on these units ranged from NC solutions to automotive refinish coatings.
Outcome
The installation of the NIMIX pipeless plant at Herberts provided the following benefits: Because NIMIX mixes from the bottom to the top it offers a flexible turndown and can process widely varying batch sizes. Reduced sampling results from the improvement in homogeneity of mixing. Rapid customer response is a key advantage in the coatings business. The NIMIX plant is easy to clean, and the reduced VOC emission from the sealed units improved yield as well as safety.
